Kids Boxing in Cape Town: What Parents Should Know Before Signing Up

Doron Zinman coaching a young boxer at Top Floor Boxing in Sea Point, Cape Town

Most parents asking about kids boxing in Cape Town are asking one question underneath all the others: is my child going to get hurt. It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer rather than a brochure.

Is boxing safe for kids?

In the way it is coached here, yes. There is no sparring and no head contact in a kids session. Nobody gets hit. What a child actually does is footwork, stance, the jab, pad work with me, and conditioning scaled to their age.

Boxing carries a reputation built on professional fights televised at midnight. That has almost nothing to do with a nine-year-old learning to stand properly in a Sea Point gym on a Tuesday afternoon.

What age should a child start boxing?

Nine to twelve is the range I coach. Younger than that and the technical instruction does not land. Much older and they are usually ready for a full adult hour.

Nine to twelve is also when coordination develops fastest, which makes it the cheapest time in a person's life to learn to move well.

What does a kids boxing session actually involve?

Thirty minutes. Hands wrapped, a warm-up, then stance and footwork, the jab, pads with me, and bag rounds with reaction games at the end. Thirty minutes rather than an hour because focus at this age drops off long before sixty minutes is up.

What kids actually get out of it

Self-defence, taught properly rather than imagined. Coordination and balance that carry into every other sport they play. Focus, because thirty minutes of one thing done correctly is its own training. And confidence, which does not come from being told they are good at something but from watching themselves get better at something hard.

What does kids boxing cost in Cape Town?

At Top Floor Boxing in Sea Point, a private one-to-one kids session is R300 for thirty minutes. A private group is R200 per child for two to six kids, so siblings and friends work out cheaper. No contract, no joining fee, no monthly membership.

Group classes or one-to-one?

In a class a coach splits attention a dozen ways, and a child who is slightly behind stays slightly behind. One-to-one means stance, guard and footwork get corrected in the first session rather than becoming habits to unlearn in a year.

A private group keeps most of that while costing less, because you pick who is in the room rather than turning up to whoever booked.

Who is coaching your child

Me, every session. I am Doron Zinman, born and raised in Cape Town, I studied here, and I fought professionally to a 3-1 record before coaching full time. Your child is not handed to a rotating junior instructor working off a programme written in another country.

Where

Third floor, 56 Regent Road, Sea Point. A few minutes from Green Point, Mouille Point, Bantry Bay, Fresnaye and the V&A Waterfront, and a short drive from Camps Bay and Clifton. Weekday afternoons after school are the quietest slots and the easiest to book.
